# Grading

> Set up grading rules, manage gradebooks, submit grades, and correct approved grades.

Grading starts with setup records, then moves into class gradebooks. Teachers enter
scores for assigned classes. Reviewers approve submissions and amendments when your
school requires review.

## Setup checklist

Create these before teachers start grading:

* **Grading periods** for each grade entry window.
* **Grading schemes** for formulas, weights, and computation rules.
* **Grading scales** for labels and passing bands.
* **Transmutation scales** when your school converts raw scores into final grade
  values.

<Info>
  Grading scales and transmutation scales are different. A grading scale explains
  the final grade. A transmutation scale converts one score form into another.
</Info>

## Gradebook workflow

  </Step>

  <Step title="Lock and submit">
    Lock the period when entry is complete, then submit grades for review if your
    school uses approvals.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Grade submissions

A grade submission sends a class, period, or defined scope to reviewers. Reviewers
can approve, reject, or return it. Approval may post grades when the submission
reaches the final review step.

## Unlocks and amendments

Use the right correction path:

| Situation                               | Use                               |
| --------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Grades are not submitted yet | Edit the gradebook directly. |
| Grade period is locked but not approved | Request a grade period unlock. |
| Grade was already approved or posted | Submit a grade amendment request. |

## Grade amendments

A grade amendment changes an official grade with a reason and review trail. It
should include the student, class, current grade, proposed grade, and correction
reason.

<Warning>
  Do not use amendments for ordinary score entry. Amendments are for correcting
  official grades after approval or posting.
